Paediatric dentistry/paedodontics
A child’s fear of visiting the dentist is a normal reaction to a new place, new people and tools, which is why we properly prepare a young patient for a visit to the office. At the beginning, we try to familiarise the child with the new place in the company of a guardian that gives the young patient a sense of security. The child gets to know the equipment and tools that can be used during the treatment. The doctor establishes contact with the child, explains in simple terms the course of the visit and explains what the patient may feel.
It is difficult for a toddler to understand the deeper meaning of visiting a dentist. That is why we use various methods to stimulate the child’s imagination and distract him/her from anything that could create a sense of danger. We try to reward the child’s courage and we do not extend the visit beyond the need. We never cheat our young patients or act “by surprise”. We know that trust in a dentist should be built from an early age.
Having a choice of many methods of treating caries, we are primarily guided by the patient’s health, but we do not forget about the needs related to aesthetics. Even a young child needs to feel attractive. In the case of the treatment of milk teeth, we suggest that children choose the colour of the filling. In this way, we allow children to become involved in making decisions about treatment and make an unpleasant procedure more fun. Pink and gold for “princesses” and blue or green for “pilots” are the most frequently chosen colours.
We have a special playroom for the youngest patients, which directly allows them to overcome their fear and create a fairy-tale atmosphere. The first contact with the dentist is made there.
We know that all, even the most absurd child’s behaviour during or before dental treatment, results from fear. We understand this fear and help children overcome it.
